There has been a dramatic upswing in violence in the Caucasus region of northern Russia recently. It is being reported today that seven women were killed in a Russian sauna in Dagestan on Thursday evening, August 13, 2009. The women were not particularly targeted, but were killed as a result of the recent Russian muslim violence rising in the region.
There has been growing violence and lawlessness in Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia. The violence is attributed to muslim separatists waging a low-level war against high level officals. They have targeted civilians and officials with ties to the Kremlin. The pro-Kremlin officials are perceived as cracking down on corruption in the predominantly muslim regions.
About the same time the seven women were murdered, islamic separatists attacked and killed four policemen manning a nearby checkpoint in Buinaksk, a town about 25 miles from local capital Makhachkala. In a separate incident, four policemen and one separatist were killed in a shootout in Chechnya.
Earlier this week Ingushetia Construction Minister Ruslan Amerkhanov was shot dead in his well fortified office. His nephew and assistant was also injured in the attack. Last month, Ingush leader Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, was left in a coma when he was injured in a car bomb attack. In June, Aza Gazgireyeva, the deputy head of Ingushetia’s supreme court, was shot and killed in her car.
Earlier this week in Chechnya, Zarema Sadulayeva, the chief of Russian NGO Let’s Save the Generation, and her husband were shot and killed. They had been abducted. Their bodies were found stuffed in the trunk of a car. Chechen human rights activist Natalya Estemirova was killed in the same way. In all, three human rights activists have been murdered in Chechnya in the past month.
Also earlier this week in Dagestan, journalist Malik Akhmedilov was found dead on the outskirts of the capital city of Makhachkala. Dagestan’s interior minister Adilgerei Magomedtagirov, was shot dead while attending the wedding of a colleague’s daughter.
There has been increasing international, Russian and local outrage with the Russian muslim violence rising and this most recent incident of seven women killed in a Russian sauna.
